High Button Shoe

Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave
Lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful.

After all our hopes and dreams have come and gone
And our children sift though all we've left behind
May the clues that they discover and the memories they uncover
Become the light that leads them to the road we each must find.

~The Mourning of Ren B. Parker~

....an old country cemetery is near here. I visit it often. The 'old sections' with the old graves dominate the south side, where the families of the dead are long gone also and they receive little to no attention.  I have long felt these graves and their names should not be forgotten and each year clean some of them and give them flowers. Often wild flowers of pale lavender flax grow across them in late spring and early summer in remembrance  of who rests there from over a century ago. Often their only flowers.

In cleaning one large embanked lot one springI found under nearly a foot of decaying years old leaves, this tiny gravestone. Barely legible, I used pencil and paper tracing to find the words.  I sat on the ground, crying for this families loss, of this son, who died before his first birthday, and  was forever changed by the stone words.
